Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. Plantar fasciitis can result from aging because our tendons and ligaments lose elasticity as we age and become more susceptible to injury. In young people, injuries or overuse may cause plantar fasciitis. Other causes include stress fractures, flat feet, medications such as birth control pills or steroids that alter normal foot structure, and poorly fitting shoes or high heels. Abnormal growth of cells causes bone tumors. They may be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Although rare, bone tumors can occur in the foot and ankle. They can be primary (originating in the bone) or secondary (originating in another part of the body).
Symptoms of a bone tumor may include:
Fracture from slight injury,
Bone pain, often at night,
Occasionally, a mass or swelling in the area.
A bone tumor is first diagnosed with x-rays. Advanced imaging modalities may be used to evaluate the tumor further. Surgical removal by a foot and ankle surgeon may be required for a definitive diagnosis.
